Processors Generations

Whenever we go to buy a new laptop or computer, most people only confused in Processor Generation. They even don’t know what the generation is, and how it relates to Processors. Mostly it happens to everyone. that’s why we’ll discuss in this article about generations

After this Processor Generation article, Whenever you buy a new laptop or computer, you will be able to read the processor’s generation.

What is the Processor Generations?

A generation has given to Intel’s company’s i series of processors. Intel® i series processors such as i3, i5, i7, i9, etc. The Intel company named the generation with these series, which we will tell separately. Generation in the processor means the changes in micro-architecture and its cache memory. If the generation changes, then the specification and performance of the processor also change.

Here we will take Intel processor and explain what the processor generation is and what is the benefit.

1st Generation Processors – (i3, i5, i7)

Intel company wrote Generation in Codename. Like First Generation’s Codename Nehalem. Intel’s 1st generation processor comes under the Nehalem Codename.

As for Specification

Intel i3

  • 500 Series – This series processor works on 32nm technology, 2 cores, L2 Cache Memory 256 kb per Core, L3 cache memory 4 Mbytes.

Intel i5

  • 600 Series – 32nm technology, 2 cores, L2 Cache Memory 256 kb per Core, L3 cache memory 4 Mbytes, Frequency depends on model.
  • 700 Series – 45nm technology, 4 cores, L2 Cache Memory 256 kb per Core, L3 cache memory 8 Mbytes, Frequency depends on model.

Intel i7

  • 800 Series – 45nm technology, 4 cores, L2 Cache Memory 256 kb per Core, L3 cache memory 8 Mbytes, Frequency depends on the model.
  • 900 Series – 45nm technology, 4 cores, L2 Cache Memory 256 kb per Core, L3 cache memory 8 Mbytes, Frequency depends on the model. And 900 series second specification 32nm technology, 6 cores, 256kb per core L2 cache, L3 cache memory 12 Mbytes.

2nd Generation Processors

Intel’s second Codename Sandy Bridge, which is known as the second generation launched in January 2011. Intel processors also come in here. This codename is available only in 32nm technologies.

As you read above, how architecture works in 1st generation. Similarly, in a 2nd generation has also changed the architecture and L3 cache memory.

As for Specification

Intel i3

  • 2000 Series – 32nm technology, 2 cores, L2 Cache Memory 256 kb per Core, L3 cache memory 3 Mbytes. Clock Frequency depends on the model.

Intel i5

  • 2000 Series – 32nm technology, 4 cores, L2 Cache Memory 256 kb per Core, the L3 cache memory 6 Mbytes, Clock Frequency depends on the model.

Intel i7

  • 2000 Series – 32nm technology, 4 cores, L2 Cache Memory 256 kb per Core, the L3 cache memory 8 Mbytes, Clock Frequency depends on the model.

3rd Generation Processors
