When you chose to refresh or reboot the PC, you are often encountered with the error \u201cThe drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.<\/em>” \u00a0Now, there are 4 possible reasons behind the same-<\/p>\n

  1. Mbr <\/strong>(master boot record) is damaged.<\/li>\n
  2. Windows system files are corrupted or damaged.<\/li>\n
  3. BCD (boot configuration data) is damaged.<\/li>\n
  4. There are errors on the disk.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        You have to prepare an installation disc or repair disk, either USB or CD\/DVD<\/p>\n

        Connect the installation disc to your computer and boot from it to get the window below<\/p>\n

        Choose a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard, or an input method, and then click\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0to continue.<\/p>\n

        Step 4:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Choose to Repair your computer<\/strong>\u00a0rather than\u00a0Install now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Click on\u00a0Troubleshoot<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192\u00a0Advanced options<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192\u00a0Startup Repair<\/strong> to fix problems that keep Windows from loading to unlock the hard drive.<\/p>\n

        Method Three: Fix Boot-related Files with Bootrec.exe Tool<\/h2>\n

        Step 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Insert the Windows bootable drive and boot from it.
        \nStep 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Select your language preferences, and click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.
        \nStep 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        After selecting language, press\u00a0Shift + F10<\/strong>\u00a0to open Command Prompt.

        \u00a0<\/strong>Type\u00a0bootrec.exe<\/strong>\u00a0in command prompt and press\u00a0Enter<\/strong>\u00a0key to launch the tool.

        \n2- bootrec \/FixBoot<\/strong>

        Now, when the repair process is completed, try restarting the computer and see if the issue is resolved or not, if not, then try the next method listed below.<\/p>\n

        Method Four: Fix Disk Errors with CHKDSK.exe<\/h2>\n

        Step 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Insert the Windows bootable drive and boot from it.<\/p>\n

        Step 2:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Click\u00a0Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Step 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Type the following command and press\u00a0Enter<\/strong>.
        \nChkdsk C: \/R or chkdsk C: \/F<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Step 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Type\u00a0exit<\/strong>\u00a0and press\u00a0Enter<\/strong>\u00a0to leave command prompt. After that, you should be able to refresh your computer or start Windows.<\/p>\n

        Method Five: Use System File Checker to Repair Missing or Corrupted System Files<\/h2>\n

        Step 1: <\/strong><\/p>\n

        Open Command Prompt.<\/p>\n

        Step 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Type\u00a0sfc \/scannow<\/strong>\u00a0and then press\u00a0Enter<\/strong>\u00a0key to perform the operation.<\/p>\n

        Reboot the computer to see if the issue is resolved or not, if not, then try the next fix;<\/p>\n

        Method Six: Restore Windows<\/h2>\n

        Step 1:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Boot the computer via the installation disc.
        \nStep 2:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Select your language preferences, and click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.
        \nStep 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Click\u00a0Repair your computer<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Troubleshoot\u00a0<\/strong>>\u00a0Advanced options<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0System Restore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Step 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Then, you will see the System Restore interface as follows. Now, click the Next<\/strong>\u00a0button to continue.<\/p>\n

        Method Seven: Set the correct operation<\/strong><\/h2>\n
          \n

              2. Check the volume listed by Command Prompt with\u00a0FAT32<\/strong>at the\u00a0Fs<\/strong> Once you identified the volume, type this command:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                sel vol 2<\/p>\n

                1. Replace\u00a02\u00a0with the volume\u2019s number.<\/li>\n
                2. Press\u00a0Enter<\/li>\n
                3. You need to assign a new letter to this partition. The letter must be unique, e.g. it can\u2019t be\u00a0c::<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  assign letter x:<\/p>\n

                    \n
                  1. Replace\u00a0x:\u00a0from the command above with a unique letter for this partition.<\/li>\n
                  2. Press\u00a0Enter<\/li>\n
                  3. Wait for the confirmation message from the\u00a0diskpart\u00a0utility to appear:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    DiskPart successfully assigned the drive letter or mount point.<\/p>\n

                    1. Then type<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      exit<\/p>\n

                        \n
                      1. Press\u00a0Enter<\/li>\n
                      2. Then type:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                        cd \/d x:\\EFI\\Microsoft\\Boot<\/p>\n

                          \n
                        1. Make sure to replace\u00a0x:\u00a0with the letter you\u2019ve assigned earlier.<\/li>\n
                        2. Press\u00a0Enter<\/li>\n
                        3. Then type:<\/li>\n
                        4. bootrec \/fixboot<\/li>\n
                        5. Press\u00a0Enter<\/li>\n
                        6. Then type:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                          ren BCD BCD.Backup<\/p>\n

                            \n
                          1. This will create a backup of your current BCD file.<\/li>\n
                          2. Press\u00a0Enter<\/li>\n
                          3. Then type:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                            bcdboot c:\\Windows \/l en-us \/s x: \/f ALL<\/p>\n

                              \n
                            1. Make sure to replace\u00a0x:\u00a0with the letter you\u2019ve assigned earlier.<\/li>\n
                            2. Press\u00a0Enter<\/li>\n
                            3. Remove the install media from the disc tray or USB port<\/li>\n
                            4. Type:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                              exit<\/p>\n

                              1. Press\u00a0Enter<\/li>\n
                              2. Restart the computer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
